Privacy questions are answered on the Distil privacy policy. The short version: we keep what you read and nothing else, and you can delete it from Settings.
Common questions
- Do I need an account?
- No. You can read as a guest straight away. Create an account from Settings, under Save your progress, to keep your reading when you change phones or sign in on another device. Your guest history comes with you.
- What is free and what is Pro?
- Reading is free: ten ideas a day and the first three ideas of every book. Pro removes those limits. It is an optional subscription: A$7.99 a month or A$59.99 a year, on the web, iPhone or Android. It is paid through Apple in the iPhone app, Google Play in the Android app and Stripe on the web. The yearly plan starts with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers: on the web once per person, on your first subscription only, and in the apps Apple or Google decide who is eligible. Pro bought in any one place works on the web, iPhone and Android when you are signed in to the same account.
- Can I buy Pro without an account?
- Yes, in the iPhone and Android apps you can buy Pro as a guest. We suggest creating an account afterwards, from Settings, so Pro carries over to your other devices.
- How do I cancel Pro?
- It depends where you bought it. In the iPhone app: in Distil, Settings > Manage subscription, or on the iPhone, Settings > your name > Subscriptions > Distil. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date to avoid the next charge. In the Android app: Google Play Store > profile picture > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions > Distil. On the web: Settings > Manage subscription opens your Stripe billing page. Pro keeps running to the end of the period you paid for.
- How do I restore Pro on a new phone?
- Use Restore Purchases, in Settings or on the Pro sheet, after installing Distil on a new phone or reinstalling it. Be signed in to the same Apple ID or Google account you bought with. If the purchase belongs to another Distil account, sign in to that account.
- How do I get a refund?
- Refunds for Pro bought in the app are handled by Apple, at reportaproblem.apple.com, or by Google Play, not by us. For Pro bought on the web, email us.
- How does Distil choose what to show me?
- From what you read to the end, skip and save. There is no questionnaire. The You tab shows the reading persona it has worked out so far, and Explore lets you follow topics to steer it.
- Can I change my daily goal?
- Yes. Open Settings and use the Daily goal stepper. The ring at the top of Today tracks it.
- How do I save or share an idea?
- Tap the bookmark on a card to save it. Saved ideas are grouped by book on the Saved tab. Press and hold a card to share it as an image.
- Does Distil work offline?
- It needs a connection to load new ideas. Ideas you have opened recently and your saved list are kept on the device, so they open again without one.
- How do I delete everything?
- Open Settings and choose Delete my account and data. Your reading history, saved ideas, profile and email address are removed immediately. A web (Stripe) subscription is cancelled automatically, but deleting your account does not cancel a subscription bought through Apple or Google: cancel it in the App Store or Google Play first. There is nothing to request from us afterwards.
- I am in the closed beta and something broke.
- Email us with the phone model, the operating system version and what you tapped before it went wrong. A screenshot helps. We reply within one business day.
About the app
Each card holds one idea from a well-known non-fiction book, rewritten in plain words so it takes about a minute to read, with a prompt to act on it today. There are more than a thousand ideas from over a hundred books on money, habits, relationships, thinking and living well. Every idea is written in our own words as a summary and commentary, and each card names its book and links to where you can buy it.
